Well would you look at this. Nigel Godrich, the deeply unofficial “sixth member of Radiohead”, has gone and formed a new band called Ultraísta with Laura Bettinson and Joey Waronker, after presumably feeling his hard won title coming under pressure from Phil Selway lookalikes and sexy new drummers called Roland. So what is an Ultraísta? Will it fix your tooth ache? Can it work out why The Real Housewives of New York City exists, or how? Sadly, those answers are hidden beneath more musical unknowns than you could shake a XCI/Iamamiwhoami shaped stick at. What has become readily evident, however, is that Nigel is somewhat fond of the deeply percussive electronic atmosphere perused by the likes of Thom Yorke’s The Eraser and recent Radiohead outing The King of Limbs. So much so, in fact, that it he’s redoubling his efforts to get everything on earth to sound remarkably similar, a fact not unnoticeable with new song ‘Static Light’, which throws out Eraser era shapes as backdrop to Laura Bettinson’s sultry, brilliant vocal work.
You can hear the song below, safe in the knowledge that as soon as we know something official, you will too.
