Faris Badwan, best known as comedy goth turned Krautrock crooner in The Horrors (you know, the one with the hairdo, and un-relentless height…no not THAT one…), has only gone and decided that being a full time Hell via Shoreditch frontman, isn’t enough of a workload. Hence ”Cat Eyes” (a collaborative ”boy/girl duo” effort, featuring classical muso Rachel Zeffira) has sneaked into fruition, giving us not so much a glimpse, but a well thumbed manual to Badwan’s softer side. A career move so confusingly revelatory, it’s only a dream sequence away from being the indie Inception, ”I Knew It Was Over”, is a heart achingly tender opus, presented religiously not only in setting, but in aesthetic. Spiritually faithful, the track is not one of imitation or attempt, but rather a piece so accomplished and masterful, you’d swear it was a ”most played” on the Pope’s iPod. All this from a guy who’s schtick centred around singing about collecting murder victims gloves, like an angry drunk screaming at his ex at 4am…WHODATHOUGHT IT?!
