Don Van Vliet, much better known by his stagename Captain Beefheart, died today at the age of 69. He had mixed an eclectic variety of genres to form his own brand of avant-garde psychedelia; he also garnered critical acclaim in the process, John Peel claiming “If there has ever been such a thing as a genius in the history of popular music, it’s Beefheart… I heard echoes of his music in some of the records I listened to last week and I’ll hear more echoes in records that I listen to this week.” A variety of bands have named him as an influence – from the Sex Pistols, to camp ‘alt-rockers’ Placebo. Beefheart had been suffering from multiple sclerosis – band members first described him as showing symptons in the late 70s – and is survived by his wife.
