Now they’re done recording their new album, and staring through wire mesh like trapped trendy mermen, Wild Beasts are once again trying to seep their way into your conciousness. Down below, in that rectangle of fuzzy blocks is Albatross, the first taste we’ve had of Smother, released on May 9th. It’s every bit as slinky and sexy as previous material, ethereal reverb treated guitars, piano and Hayden Thorpe’s less-terrifying-than-Anthony-Hagarty swooning falsetto croon, all finding their way into the new sound. Whether stripping back the tropical inspired complexities of the drums, and reeling in the soundscapes of before, is going to pan out in the long run, is to be seen. It would appear they certainly haven’t lost anything by doing so. Basically just as every bit sultry, and somehow even more introspectively subtly brilliant than before. Go catch them on tour and hear new material/get your snake hips on/try but fail to sing along in Hayden’s register at all costs.
