I am not an Animal Collective fan. Sure, I might well have dug Strawberry Jam and do indeed continue to hold their Fall Be Kind EP in high regard, but I’ve always found it hard to swallow their often caustic overuse of obnoxious electronic noises. It’s like baking a delicious cake, but presenting it to your guests inside a circus tent with Cirque Du Soleil performing – it’s hard to admire the baking when there’s so much superfluous shit going on around it. Their latest album, Centipede Hz, is the very definition of that, so it’s revealing how beautifully the songs from that record handle themselves when stripped of their album nonsense. In a recent session for KEXP, both Geologist and Panda Bear performed acoustic takes of ‘Wide Eyed’ and ‘Pulleys’, as well as a fully electric rendition of pre-Hz single ‘Honeycomb’. It’s almost as if all that electronic abstraction wasn’t necessary in the first place, who would have thought it? You can hear all of them, including an interview with DJ El Toro, above.
