Deep down inside, somewhere near my lower intestines I harbor a not inconsiderate hatred for Vampire Weekend (other than this jam, obviously). I’m half convinced it’s been there since birth, which predates the inception of VW by a good 14 years. It’s bound to be something to do a combination of Ezra’s face like a badly Photoshopped version of Roger Federer, the bands painfully chirpy instrumentation and obvious to the point of pastiche love of Afrobeat. What I seemingly don’t hate, however, is that particular outfit’s keyboardist. You know his name, come on, think! Okay, it’s Rostam Batmanglij. It was on the tip of your tongue wasn’t it? Of course it was. In his debut single, “Wood” he brings together sitars, guitar, bongos, violins and a surprisingly lovely singing voice together for a deliciously understated trip into the wonderful world of solo-output. Sadly, there’s no wild keyboard solo to be found, but you can’t win them all, can you?
DID YOU KNOW: It’s also a free download, you can get it from Soundcloud above. Treat yourself.
